  • At a Glance

    • 2017 dates: July 14-31 and July 31-August 18
    • Location: California coast, desert, mountains, and forests
    • Cost: $2500 +airfare
    • Initial payment: $500 + airfare
    • Balance due: June 1st
    • Work study available: $250 for any student who works >20 hrs
    • Duration: 18 days
    • Population: 15-18 yr old girls
    • Skills: acquiring and incorporating new knowledge; camping, surfing, art, literature, history, science, hiking, backcountry living, travel
    • Outcomes: Healthy, connected, vigorous students

    • This program was originally created by high-achieving local students who earned high school credit for their summer adventure
    • Sustained engagement throughout winter and spring strengthens the program significantly: it contributes to strong group identity, rich group culture, development of personal life project objectives, and holistic preparation for the trip itself
    • Sustained engagement also allows for students' families to play a role without interfering in the students' self-determination and autonomy

    • Easy flights in and out of several possible airports begins and ends the program efficiently, with well-rested students
    • Flying to the region and traveling regionally in vans encourages packing light and traveling efficiently - and the freedom that comes with it
  • Sample Itinerary

    • Fly in/out of Las Vegas, first night and last night sleep within easy drive of the airport
    • First destination: La Jolla Shores. La Jolla Playhouse, Surf lessons, Birch Aquarium, Scripp's Institute, beach bonfire, and more
    • Second destination: Los Angeles area. Ocean Institute, Griffith Park, Getty Museum, Hollywood studio, Malibu Beach
    • Third destination: Ojai. Patagonia headquarters, Ojai Raptor Center, Matilja Dam, arts and music
    • Fourth destination: Big Sur. Montana D'Oro, Salmon Creek, Elephant seals, beaches, sea otter refuge
    • Fifth destination: Bay Area. Monterey whale boats and aquarium, Baker Beach, Golden Gate Park, downtown SF, Berkeley
    • Sixth destination: Yosemite/Tuolomne. Glacier Point, Half Dome, Vernal Falls, Cathedral Peak, Hetch Hetchy
    • Seventh destination: Eastern Sierra. Mono Lake, hot springs, Alabama Hills, Death Valley, Red Rocks
